Erman Gürcüm was born in İzmir in 1992. He began his artistic career in 2011 by winning first place in the Painting Department of the Faculty of Art and Design at Doğuş University.
During his education, he received training from many master artists in his field, working towards discovering his artistic understanding. In 2015, he began his Master's program in Plastic Arts at the Yeditepe University Institute of Social Sciences.
Having completed his Master's degree, the artist continues his work in his own studio. "Every represented object expresses a meaning beyond itself. A path that begins with seeing inside what is visible..."
In his works, Gürcüm explores the contrasting aesthetics of beauty and ugliness with a contemporary approach. He criticizes the pleasure, ostentation, and sense of possession that life offers to people, while simultaneously reminding the viewer of the futility and brevity of worldly possessions through a paradoxical language. He approaches the Vanitas painting tradition in a contemporary way, questioning worldly pleasures and the objective world.
The artist, exploring the concepts of life and death through the allure of worldly pleasures, depicts the skull object in his works as a self-portrait.
Through an allegorical narrative style, he aims to allow the viewer to find a piece of themselves in the story that unfolds in his works.
