We're visiting the Centre Spatial Guyanais at the 520th Art Encounter.
The Centre Spatial Guyanais (CSG), one of the world's most strategic launch centers thanks to its location near the equator in French Guiana, was established in 1968. Jointly operated by the European Space Agency (ESA), the French space agency CNES, and Arianespace, the center is today considered the most important space center in both Europe and the world.
Hundreds of satellites have been launched from CSG aboard Ariane, Vega, and Soyuz rockets to date. This center has been the starting point for many technologies that are integral to our daily lives, from communication and weather forecasting to scientific observation and internet access. From this perspective, the CSG is not just a launching base; it is humanity's gateway to the sky.
The center holds a unique significance for the region: it contributes to a wide range of areas in French Guiana, from education and culture to tourism and employment. It introduces space technologies to the local population, raises scientific awareness, and serves as a cultural attraction.
At this gathering, we will tour CSG's exhibitions, explore the relationship between space and space, and consider the horizons that science opens up for art.
