At our 516th Art Meeting, we visit the studio of sculptor Eda Taşlı.
Born in Istanbul in 1978, Eda Taşlı graduated from the Kündekari Wood Art Workshop at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. Choosing wood as a communication medium in her sculptural practice, the artist presents the viewer with a theatrical universe through her sculptures starring fairytale-like characters. While each character carries a different story, they all exist within the same universe, just like the world we live in.
The theme of "quest" is prominent in the artist's work. Her characters are figures who pursue unattainable ideals within us and who, in this pursuit, become the very journey itself. These four-fingered, naive yet bewildered figures represent unreality and an inner world filled with hope. No matter how strange they may appear, they never lose hope.
Eda Taşlı's work began with significant achievements such as the MSGSÜ TÜYAP Sculpture Exhibition (2007), the "İpek Ahmet Merey" Art Award (2008), and first place in the Leonardini Wooden Toy Competition (2008). In 2016, she held her first solo exhibition, "Shall We Go?", and in 2020, she attracted attention with her "Wooden Pilot Sculpture" project, which was included in the Istanbul Airport Collection.
In 2023, her works were exhibited in the "Eighth Color: Woman and Trace" exhibition at the Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM), and also at the NordArt International Fair in Germany as part of the 2023 Turkey: Focus Country program. That same year, she also attracted international attention with her "İsyankar/Rebel Series" collection.
The artist continues to produce in her studio in Kadıköy, Istanbul, and participates in numerous international fairs, including Aqua Art Miami, Art Basel, and Contemporary Istanbul.
