512. ART MEETING

In our 512th Art Meeting, we visit the studio of artist Serkan Aka.

Born in Isparta in 1982 and living in Istanbul, artist A. Serkan Aka's productions range between disciplines such as sculpture, sound-music, installation and performance. While his practice is shaped around lightness, attention and simple relationships regarding the everyday, sound is both a guide and a fundamental output in these productions.

Aka, who studied Industrial Engineering at Boğaziçi University, has focused on sound experiences in recent years after producing in different fields such as illustration, sculpture, interior and lighting design. The performances he has given with Tophane Noise Band, the sound parks he has established in different cities with the Buluntu Sesler team and his participation on stage with the instruments he designed in the theater play called Geç Gün reveal the multifaceted relationship the artist has established with sound.

The artist held his first solo exhibition Havada in Schneidertempel in 2024. In the same year, he took part in the Polyphonic Garden (curator: Eda Yiğit) exhibition held at Tokatlıyan Han. In February 2025, he participated in the guest artist program of Moussem Nomadic Arts Center in Brussels and opened his solo exhibition titled Somewhere Around Here curated by Amira Arzık. His solo exhibition titled Aslı Şimdi, which includes his recent works, is currently ongoing at Kıraathane İstanbul Edebiyat Evi.

In this meeting, we visit A. Serkan Aka’s studio to witness his multidisciplinary production process more closely and to come together with the artist in the creative field where sound and material come together.
