In our 511th Art Meeting, we visit artist Burhan Uygur’s exhibition at Casa Botter.
Born in 1940 in the Tirebolu district of Giresun, Burhan Uygur completed his secondary education in Trabzon and began his art education at the State Academy of Fine Arts in 1961. The artist, who first worked in the Nurullah Berk and then Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu studios, opened his first solo exhibition at the Beyoğlu Art Gallery in 1968. He graduated from the academy a year later. The same year, Uygur, who worked with Corneille at the Salzburg Summer Academy with an Austrian Government scholarship, was chosen as the “Young Painter of the Year” by the Contemporary Painters Association.
He won the Sedat Simavi Visual Arts Award in 1978 and the Second Prize of the Asia-Europe Biennial in 1982. The artist, who opened nearly twenty solo exhibitions in the country, also exhibited his works in the Netherlands and Germany. He attracted attention with his exhibitions titled “Empty Dreams Built on Nothingness” opened at Taksim Gallery in 1972 and “What Use Are Days for?” at Ankara State Gallery in 1974.
Burhan Uygur painted ordinary objects and daily life in a figurative language, blending them with notes from his inner world. By bringing together different techniques and materials in his works, he established a subtle, poetic connection between life and art. For him, poetry was not only something to be read, but also something to be felt, lived and integrated with painting.
The works of the artist, who passed away in 1992, continue to meet the audience with a fresh feeling.
The Solo Botter: Burhan Uygur exhibition curated by Levent Çalıkoğlu at Casa Botter focuses on the artist’s inner world, thematic depth and visual poetry. The exhibition is not only a retrospective, but also offers a powerful experience that traces the connection Uygur established with life.
