We are visiting the studio of artist Ayfer Tutkan in our 510th Art Meeting.

Born in Karaman in 1979, the artist graduated from the Department of Painting and Crafts Education of Marmara University Atatürk Faculty of Education in 2003 from the studio of Prof. Tülin Onat. She completed the Işık University Art Theory and Criticism MA Program in 2018. Tutkan, who also worked with Prof. Halil Akdeniz and Prof. Meriç Hızal during her education, has been participating in many local and international exhibitions for many years; and continues her production in the field of original prints and ex-libris.

The artist re-embodies all kinds of textures of history and cultures; the names and events in every story that contains a noble enthusiasm, from beliefs to mythology, from legends to art, with the endless possibilities of fabric and cloth. In these bodies, surprising discoveries of feelings towards the reality of human existence are experienced. As a tool for recreating every story and tracing the traces of embodied cultures, the cloth and fabric bravely carry it to the present day with a different spirit, in a simplicity plane independent of light, color, texture and spaces, and make it visible in its place.

Recently, she took part in the exhibitions Doğanın Resim (The Picture of Nature) held at Akbank Sanat and Dünyanın Ağırlığı (The Weight of the World) held at Sabancı University Kasa Gallery. In 2024, she presented her works in the exhibitions Kendi Tüketen Tür (The Self-Consuming Type) and Flesh and Stone. Among her exhibitions abroad, there are events organized in different countries such as Egypt and Bulgaria within the scope of the International Art Festival.

Ayfer Tutkan, who is also a member of the Board of Directors of Tayf Culture and Art Association, continues her productions in her workshop in Istanbul.
