In our 507th Art Meeting, we visit Serhat Kiraz, one of the important names of conceptual art.
Born in Istanbul in 1954, Serhat Kiraz graduated from the Department of Advanced Painting at the State Academy of Fine Arts in 1979. He made a remarkable start in the international arena at a young age by participating in the Balkan Countries Plastic Arts Exhibition in 1977, an exhibition in Stuttgart in 1979 and the XI. Paris Biennial in 1980. From his first works with the Art Definition Society, which he founded in 1977-1978, to the present day, he has approached the work of art not only as an object of perception but also as an object of philosophy.
The artist argues that cultures, no matter how complex and multi-layered, are born from the human mind and imagination and therefore should be evaluated with a holistic approach. In line with this philosophical perspective, he combines painting, drawing, photography and light sources in a geometric, measured and intellectual structure. In his installations, he expects a multidimensional, perceptual and conceptual participation from the viewer; he creates an original narrative language with his sensitivity to space and his care in material selection.
The artist's production process is independent of a fixed studio order. In his own words, "I do not produce and exhibit things; I design and produce according to space. Therefore, I talk about two different situations: making an exhibition and exhibiting. The place I am is my studio." He defines art production as a temporary and transformable process directly related to space.
We are meeting at Maçka Art Gallery to listen to this unique relationship Serhat Kiraz established with space and his current productions directly narrated by the artist.
