489.We are visiting artist Ahmet Elhan at our Art Meeting. The artist was born in Izmir and studied Graphic Design at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Marmara University and Cinema-TV at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Dokuz September University.
Ahmet Elhan produces work by questioning the photographic image. He researches, constructs, experiences the image, the look, the production methods and processes of this image, the ways of its exhibition, at the same time coincides, matches, solves and reconstructs them. The filmed, fictionalized reality(s), narrative(s) are receding into the background in a calculated way. It loses its importance. A very subtle, meticulously constructed tension is formed between the viewer and the work: the Deceptively framed Deceptions of the works, the breathtaking beauty of the images, the layers made visible by the work, and the tension between what Elhan questions and resists. This tension pushes the viewer into a different area of inquiry about the photographic image.
The artist works in a clear space, the boundaries of which are determined by sharp lines related to the photographic image. Within this field, with the language of this field and the ways of practice, he criticizes this field. He does not look inside from the outside, he processes his queries with the material inside. He treats the camera as a certain ideological device, as both a tool and an object of this interrogation. Every single material that he uses in the production process becomes a part of the work.
Describing his art practice as a "code breaker", Elhan questions the knowledge, perceptions, assumptions and problems within the area created by the photographic image by using the language of this area and again creating an act of resistance within this area. The artist, who works on photographic images, lives and produces in Istanbul.
