475. At our art meeting, Chiharu Shiota will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Japan-Turkey diplomatic relations. as part of the year, we are visiting his solo exhibition “Between the Worlds”, which was organized at the invitation of Istanbul Modern Dec.
While Deconstructing the conceptual framework of the exhibition, Shiota draws on Istanbul's position between Asia and Europe. It is also inspired by the location of Istanbul Modern in Karaköy, which has been one of the busiest districts of the city for centuries and includes its historical port. The artist establishes a relationship between the ships that dock and leave the port, the passengers traveling on these ships and their stories and the story of his migration from Japan to Germany. The artist, who wrapped the entire exhibition hall with net-like red threads in his installation at Istanbul Modern, emphasizes the theme of “existence in absence” by placing the suitcases inside this mass. Red, the most commonly used color of the artist, represents the blood in the veins and the flow of life, while metaphorically connecting people, emotions and memories. Each of the suitcases in the placement represents a person for Shiota. Suitcases connected to each other with red ropes create a visual context that makes the viewer question both personal and collective themes such as home, belonging and identity. Thus, the artist wants the viewer to have a physical and emotional relationship with the work in order to complete the work by adding the concepts of time, space, movement, memory to his installation. Suitcases are used as symbols that carry emotions and memories beyond the objects they carry in them, and emphasize the past and the future.
The exhibition ”Between Worlds" feeds on the cosmopolitan identity of Istanbul and the artist's own migration story, while Deconstructing a contemplative space where viewers can think about their own lives, memories and relationships within a more universal definition of humanity. Thus, the universe created by Shiota using threads not only offers a visually impressive space, but also acts as an invitation for a person to explore the labyrinth of his inner world.
Chiharu Shiota, who redefined the concepts of memory and consciousness by collecting ordinary objects such as shoes, keys, beds, chairs and clothes and wrapping them with huge structures made of yarn, was born in Osaka in 1972. Continuing her studies in Berlin, Shiota explores the feeling of "existing in absence" with her installations, while in her sculptures, drawings, performance videos, photographs and canvases, she reveals the abstract feelings she associates with human existence.
