473.During our art meeting, we are visiting the Mosaic Museum located in Kazlıçeşme Sanat.
Kazlıçeşme Sanat underwent restoration between 2015-2018 Dec. During the restoration, a mosaic belonging to the Late Roman – Early Byzantine period was found on the floor. The mosaic, which was found to be largely intact, has been reported to the Directorate of Istanbul Archaeological Museums. With the decision of on-site protection, it has been covered with glass and made suitable for exhibition. The mosaic is important because it is the largest example found outside the city wall in Istanbul. Considering that the figure continues outside the building, an application has been made to the Directorate of Istanbul Archaeological Museums.
As a result of the excavation carried out under the supervision of the directorate, the entire mosaic was reached in 2019. a burial chamber, a sarcophagus and skeletons were also found in the area in 2021. In order to be a new witness for the history of Istanbul, this space has been transformed into the Mosaic Museum. In the center of the polychrome mosaic panel made with the Opus tessellatum technique, there is an octagram main motif placed in a circle with a wave and mesh motif border, and the composition is enriched by a combination of interlocking knot motifs surrounding this main form, a triangle and a square surrounded by parallel edges.
In the central circle in the octagram, a floral motif has been created with triangles on which green, brown, orange, purple colors are preferred on a light background. Among the knot motifs found on the exterior of the main composition are Decals of kantharos, ivy, lotus flower, four-petaled flower, and after the knot motifs, another composition consisting of eight-pointed star motifs was switched to. Suleyman knot Decals are used in the square shaped areas between the star motifs and reveal a rich appearance. We will make our visit accompanied by a museum guide.
