At our 571st Art Gathering, we are visiting the studio of artist Özgür Korkmazgil.
Özgür Korkmazgil was born in Mersin in 1968 and has been working in his studio in Istanbul since 1993. The artist interprets contemporary iconography, addressing the dilemmas of modern man, consumer culture, and social collapse through a figurative language. In Turkey, her notable exhibitions include “Virus, Please Kill Me” (2011), “+18” (2010), “Where is My Privacy” (2009), and “Gastronomic Orgasm” (2008) at Galeri Zilberman, as well as “70’s” (2006) at Pg art Gallery and “Starting from the Middle” (2023) at Feshane. Internationally, she has participated in significant events such as “Broken Constellation” (2015-2016) in Zurich and Rome, “Figure Out” (2012) in Dubai, the Tehran Biennial (2006), and the Çanakkale Biennial (2009), and has also been featured at the Contemporary Istanbul Art Fair between 2006 and 2017. Speed and changing visual flow are defining elements in her artistic practice; the artist advocates for the use of all media options and brings together different disciplines of the visual arts. Reconstructing his concepts in each new period, Korkmazgil creates tension by painting large surfaces in different ways on his canvases, takes excitement in preserving white plastic as a color, and aims for rhythmic concentration with a relaxed style as if working on paper; he constructs his compositions with a new understanding of figures, paying attention to the space between objects and figures.
