In our 569th Art Gathering, we are visiting the studio of artist Feyzan Alasya.
Born in Istanbul in 1976, the artist graduated from Marmara University Atatürk Faculty of Education, Department of Painting and Art Education in 2002; in the same year, she was accepted to the Master's Program in Painting at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. While working as a painting teacher in state schools, she completed her master's degree in 2005, then resigned from her teaching position and worked with painter Kasım Koçak between 2008 and 2010. In 2012, she participated in the Florence Academy of Art's "Painting Figure In Oil" summer program and continues her work in Bodrum and Istanbul.
The artist believes that the most powerful way to understand the world and human nature is through narratives nourished by collective memory, such as myths, literature, and cinema. Comparing the universe to an ocean and humanity to a whole of opposites, the artist conveys her own story, the social traumas we experience in contemporary life, and the events we are subjected to, through a surreal language.
The production process begins with the compilation of raw sketches and notes, mostly drawn on paper. Parallel to the flow of mental life, these fragments are assembled into collages according to internal intensity. Layered spaces, figures, movement, and gestures form the basic compositional elements of this fragmented structure. When the painting is complete, each fragment takes its final form within its own emotional integrity. Dreams and dream recordings are also used in the construction of this whole. The unique structure and logic of dreams, containing a hidden humor even in the most frightening moments, guide the artist. The absurdities and discontinuities in the dream structure act as a guide, allowing for the exploration of spatial and semantic voids in real life. In this way, even the simplest daily routines acquire a surreal language in the paintings; reality is fragmented and reborn within an emotional whole.
The act of painting is always seen by the artist as an ongoing process. More important than the final result is the process itself and the stations along this route. Life is composed of traces and fragments; humanity is constantly striving to reconstruct a fragmented whole. In this context, the pursuit of completion and satisfaction constitutes the fundamental driving force of artistic production.
The artist's work has been featured in numerous exhibitions since 2008, starting with the Salzburg Summer Academy, followed by exhibitions at the Galleria Borghese in Rome in 2013, the Tüyap Art Fairs (with UKKSA and Galeri Diani) between 2014-2016, solo exhibitions at Galeri Diani (Last Mutation, A Little Heaven, A Little Hell, Daydream, Beyond Everything) between 2015-2022, the "Exchange" exhibition at Ada Sanat in 2016, the "12 cm" exhibitions in Hendaya, France and Portugal in 2017, Contemporary Istanbul (Galeri Diani) in 2021, and Artweeks XII in 2025. She has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions both in Turkey and abroad, including the Edition (Kun Art Space, Istanbul), the 2026 Women In Art Fair (Oxo Gallery, London), and the 7067.SOKAK solo exhibition at Kun Art Space in Adana in 2025. She was also awarded as the Winner Artist in The Great Book Of Art Makers 2026, published by the Arts To Hearts Project in 2026.
