In our 446th art meeting, we come together with artist Serkan Aka. Aka was born in Isparta in 1982 and completed his education at Boğaziçi University, Department of Industrial Engineering. During his university education, he worked in the Fine Arts Club. Afterwards, he worked in illustration, installation and interior design. He produced installations for many venues such as BÜMED, the French Cultural Centre, Muaf Bar, and Mundo Azul Berlin. His works have been exhibited in places such as the Istanbul Design Biennial, Cologne Ökorausch Festival, and Bozcaada Art Gallery. His illustrated picture books were published by İletişim Publications. Serkan has recently focused on sound-orientated works and has performed with the Tophane Noise Band. He produced sound parks in different cities with the Buluntu Sesler team. He is currently taking part in the theatre play ‘The Other Day’ both with the instruments he designed and as a performer.
The exhibition In the Air at the Schneidertempel Art Centre offers an experience of the vitality of objects and the random flow of collisions. Aka creates sound sculptures and installations by bringing together ordinary and often-used objects. She constructs the space as a soundscape suspended in the air based on sounds in nature, birds, whales and sounds in the city.
In the sounds emanating from the everyday objects she collects, she traces the disappeared beings and memories that are no longer there. She searches for sounds that have been left out in the volumes she creates by setting up assemblages that focus on making randomness a continuous experience. This process is based on the practice of listening, attention and noticing. The exhibition will be accompanied by the artist Serkan Aka.
