In our 431st art meeting, we visit Ali Bakova. It has been 40 years since designer Ali Bakova, who aims to create a contemporary synthesis by bringing the traditional functionality of the geography he lives in to contemporary life with its origins, started pointing to something far away with his designs. During his career, Ali Bakova, who has designed corporate brands, trained students and exhibited his designs in many local and foreign museums, has transformed the icon of the “fez” into an object of daily use by using it on felt, a traditional material, and producing it as a tapestry. As ti wall traveled around the world, his Galata prefabricated chair, inspired by the old Galata Bridge, was included in collections, and his beadwork crazy Mustafa, which he had prison inmates design and produce from beads the characters they watched in cartoons, was included in the Asian Design Encyclopedia as “sociological design”.
Invited to the Venice Design Biennale in 2017, Bakova participated in the Venice Design Biennale with her installation sleep walker, an installation shaped by the phenomenon of migration and the confusion of diasporic identity. On the one hand, she plays the main character of a feature-length psychological thriller film about design and technology, and on the other hand, she is making a documentary called Le taxi commun about Maslak Auto Industry, where she has had a workshop for 12 years. At the same time, he is also preparing the handbook of the designer child, 04, which he wrote in order to contribute to the children of our country and to instill creativity. 04, Bakova continues to create contemporary designs, pioneer the Turkitsch design movement and pioneer collective formations such as “incubation-fide” that produce together with different disciplines in order to carry the traditions, customs and culture of this geography to daily life and introduce it to our global blue ball world.
We will also visit the exhibition “RED: 100” exhibition curated by maker and designer Ali Bakova. Discovering the creative community in Maslak Atatürk Oto Sanayi, “RED: 100” exhibition, which explores the creative community in Maslak Atatürk Auto Industry, consists of nearly 100 works in different mediums by 40 artists and designers who once passed through the area.
