Art Meeting 427

427.In our art meeting, we visit the studio of artist Can Aytekin. Can Aytekin, (b.1970, Istanbul) graduated from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts Faculty, Department of Painting, and then received his master's degree from the university's Department of Painting in 2000. In 2013, he completed his Proficiency in Art at MSGSU Department of Painting and is currently a lecturer at the University's Gravure Sub-Atelier.

Aytekin's works have been shown at venues such as ARTER, Elgiz Museum, Riverrun, Ariel Art, PiArtworks, Kare Art Gallery, Versus Art Project in Turkey, and have recently been included in the Vehbi Koç Foundation permanent collection of contemporary art. The book published following her solo exhibition 'Empty House' at ARTER includes texts by Eda Berkmen, Nusret Polat and Ender Keskin.

Aytekin draws on the relationships between writing, painting and architecture as well as transforming forms and motifs. Her works are formed by repeating a certain number of templates. Using archetypes, the artist creates paramets with transfers, prints or stencils. By reworking the images, he observes the nuances of his experiments with color, texture, paint and line thickness. The repetition of simple forms reveals a general harmony and order in Aytekin's works and series. However, the artist uses raw materials within a controlled compositional structure; he allows the paint to drip, stick and spill in his works. Thus, each variation opens up for discussion the tension between the limits of the work and the vitality of the materials.

Using traditional methods of representation such as shading or perspective in his series, the artist has applied these methods to question and test, as opposed to creating an illusion of reality. The artist uses shadows, tones and color intensities simultaneously but in contradictory ways to create dimensionality on the canvas, allowing objects or spaces to oscillate between two and three dimensions.

His works, in which he abstracts the forms of objects and structures and brings them together with the images in his memory, reveal the artist's research on line, color, surface, space and the act of seeing.
