In our 456th art meeting, we visit the works of Prof. Emin Barın (1913-1987), one of the doyens of Turkish graphic art, calligrapher and bookbinder, at Artİstanbul Feshane. Emin Barın was born in Bolu in 1913 in a family belonging to the ilmiye class. He attended primary and secondary school in Bolu, and between 1928 and 1932 he studied at the Higher School of Education in Istanbul, where he worked as a teacher for a short time. Between 1934 and 1936, he studied at the Painting and Drawing Department of the Gazi Education Institute in Ankara and won the European exam opened by the Directorate of Education Publications. Before going to Europe, he briefly took calligraphy lessons from Kamil Akdik and bookbinding lessons from Necmeddin Okyay at the State Academy of Fine Arts, while working at the Fine Arts Printing House under the Directorate of Education Publications. In 1937, he went to Germany and studied bookbinding and writing, first in Weimar and then in Leipzig. He stayed in Turkey between 1939 and 1941, but could not return to Germany as World War II began. He completed his unfinished education in Leipzig between 1941 and 1943. After his return to Turkey, he opened a large exhibition of lettering and bookbinding at the Academy of Fine Arts, which attracted a great deal of attention, and immediately afterwards he was appointed as a lecturer at the Academy's Illuminated Arts Department.
